Sleuths of the Vellore Unit of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Tuesday arrested the Superintendent of Stamps, Vellore and, an unauthorised worker, at the Collectorate, on charges of graft. Police also seized Rs 59,170 from them.
Responding to a complaint from Damayanthi, of Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai and living in Chennai, stating that Superintendent of Stamps Vidya (35) demanded Rs 50,000 to reduce the stamp duty for registering a 39-cent plot of agricultural land in Tiruvannamalai municipality area, a trap was set.
The complainant had purchased the land in 2010 for Rs 1.55 lakh and registered the land after paying stamp dut of Rs 12,000. However, the joint sub-registrar office in Tiruvannamalai had informed her about that shortage of stamp duty, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of DVAC, Vellore, M Balasubramanian.
Damayanthi had approached the Deputy Collector (Stamp Duty) of Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts, and contested the case said the DSP.
Though Vidya assured Damayanthi that she would charge only Rs 14,092 as stamp duty for the land, she demanded Rs 75,000 as bribe. After bargaining, Vidya settled for Rs 50,000 to reduce the stamp duty.
Following this, Damayanthi lodged a complaint with the DVAC. A police team led by the DSP caught Vidya and Chandru, red-handed while receiving the bribe amount. The police team has also seized Rs 9,170 unaccounted money from Chandru.
