HYDERABAD: After the gap of a year, the inter-collegiate cultural competitions of Osmania University began on Tuesday. With a host of competitions for students of various colleges affiliated to the varsity, the three-day event will test students in performing arts, fine arts as well as their literary skills.The university will also host the South zone inter-university cultural festival in 2012, announced the youth welfare officer, Dr U Umesh Kumar.On Day One, participants from around five to six colleges came attired to enthrall the audience with classical and folk dance performances.Addressing those present at the inaugural ceremony, vice-chancellor of Osmania University, Professor S Satyanarayana emphasized the need to encourage participation in extra-curricular activities apart from academics to build discipline among the students.An interesting mix of folk dances were lined up for the day from across the country. While students of St Pious Degree College for Women were attired in traditional Gond tribal attire, students of Bhavan’s college came dressed up for an Afro folk performance on a medley of thematic music.The winners in various competitions will be announced on November 25 and the prize distribution ceremony held a week later.The winners will represent OU at the inter-university competitions.
