P N Bhavani wins Jaiji Peter award

KOCHI: Pallickal N Bhavani was adjudged the winner of the Jaiji Peter Environmental Award 2011. Bhavani, native of Kadappakuzhi in Kollam district, has been fighting against uncontrolled sand-mining for the last 15 years. Bhavani and her allies were involved in several strikes and court cases to bring the issue to light. She would be awarded Rs 10,000, along with a citation presented by ex-minister K R Gauri Amma at the 15th Jaiji Peter Commemoration and Jaiji Peter Environmental Award 2011 to be held on May 1, 2012 at the Jawahar Balabhavan, Alappuzha. T M Thomas Issac MLA will deliver the Jaiji Peter memorial lecture on “Environment and Woman Empowerment.”
