The AP High Court on Monday dismissed a public interest petition challenging the state government’s decision to permit 20,000 new auto rickshaws in the city.
A division bench comprising acting chief justice P C Ghose and justice Vilas V Afzulpurkar made this order while dealing with a plea filed by the Nagole Autorickshaw Drivers Welfare Association. The petitioner’s counsel alleged that the government has decided to permit 20,000 new autorickshaws in the city with an intention to benefit auto showrooms’ dealers and private financiers. Several autodrivers are already suffering due to ‘unhealthy’ competition. The government issued the GO 90 on Sept 5 under pressure from auto dealers, he remarked.
The bench said that the government’s decision is in accordance with the increase in the city’s population.
