New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tough words on lynching has not found much favour with the opposition parties.
This was in evidence at the meeting of parliamentary panel on Minority Affairs which was attended by the JD(U), Congress and Left and Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
The entire Opposition walked out in anger. It so transpired that as the meeting began to discuss the strategy on education for Minorities, the opposition parties demanded a resolution to be moved against lynching. Some, like congress leader Mausam Noor, wanted a two-minute silence to be kept for those who died due to lynching.
Naqvi flatly refused saying this was not part of the agenda. Naqvi also reminded Noor that as the PM has already condemned it, it should not be brought up again.
The Opposition, though, was not impressed with PM's statement. In fact most of them, like Mamata Banerjee and Owaisi, were of the opinion that the PM has said this earlier as well. Though nothing on the ground nothing has changed.
The Opposition complains that the message needs to be stronger and that the BJP-ruled states must walk the talk.
In fact PM's statement came a day after thousands turned up in Delhi and four other cities across the country holding aloft placards as a part of the #NotInMyName demonstrations calling for an end to the lynching of innocent Muslims by mobs of cow vigilantes.
Though government sources say there is no connection between the two.
Now, sources say Opposition is getting a plan in place. The first will be to insist on a short duration discussion on this with a resolution to be moved in the House. And an anti-lynching law making lynching an offence punishable by death.
