BELGAUM: The Market Police have begun investigation into the alleged attack on Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) president Basavaraj Javali by Belgaum South MLA Abhay Patil. BCCI president Javali had filed a complaint against Patil for allegedly abusing and manhandling him, on Wednesday evening. Sources on condition of anonymity told Express that the police began investigation by recording statements of Basavaraj Javali and four others who were with him when the incident occurred on April 30. They will later record the statements of others who were with the legislator. Police will also record the statement of MLA Patil and seek permission of State Assembly speaker Bopaiah to arrest MLA Patil, if necessary.Belgaum bandh todayMeanwhile, Marathi Yuva Aghadi president Sambhajirao Patil has appealed to people, vehicle users and commercial establishments to support Monday’s Belgaum bandh to protest against MLA Abhay Patil’s alleged attack on  Javali. Patil told reporters here on Sunday that Ravana Rajya is prevailing in Belgaum instead of Ram Rajya with the alleged goondaism by Abhay Patil, his brothers and supporters. He said all the people and political parties including, BJP have extended support to the bandh. Javali said that he has contacted 58 organisations including APMC, autorickshaw unions and others which have extended their support to the bandh. Karnataka Nava Nirman Pade president Rajiv Topannavar alleged that a politician, instead of working for the development of the city is engaged in real estate business and threatening businessmen and industrialists with muscle power. Rajiv Topannavar further said that though Belgaum is known as the second capital of the state, it still remains a ‘class-C’ town owing to the negligence by the elected representatives. A protest rally has been organised from Nath Pai Circle at Shahapur to the Deputy Commissioner’s office at 10 am. Sri Ram Sene district president Ramakant Konduskar, Shiv Sena leader Prakash Shirolkar were also present on the occasion.City Fortified for Bandh To avoid any untoward incidents during the Belgaum bandh, heavy police bandobast is made across the city with the support from forces like the DARP and KSRP. Five Deputy SPs, 20 CPIs,  50 PSIs and 600 constables, four KSRP and 10 DARP units will work all through the day to maintain peace in the city. Apart from the fixed CCTVs, 20 video cameras will be used to maintain a strict vigil across the city, said police sources.
