Mumbai: Gautam Vora, the alleged boyfriend of former supermodel Viveka Babajee, who committed suicide on Friday by hanging herself at her apartment in Bandra, was questioned by the police on Monday.
He was questioned for close to two hours at Khar police station. His lawyer was present at the police station during the questioning.
Vora told police that he was merely a friend of the deceased model. He also said that Viveka was suffering from depression and that he was helping her come out of it.
On Friday, the police had reportedly recovered a diary from Viveka's residence in which she had blamed Vora for her death.
Vora, a stock analyst, was asked by a Sessions Court in Mumbai to report to police at 6 pm on Monday and 9 am on Tuesday.
Fearing arrest after he was called by police for questioning in connection with the suicide, Vora had applied for anticipatory bail on Monday. However, Principal Judge M L Tahaliyani directed him to appear before the police to record his statement.
Gautam, looking a little tense, was sitting on a bench at the court along with his two friends but went forward to hear the proceedings when the case was called up.
Outside the court, he told reporters that he had no role in Viveka's suicide.
Public Prosecutor R V Kini informed the court that at present the police had no intention to arrest Gautam on abetment charge and they only wanted to record his statement.
Police would decide whether or not a case of abetment could be made against Gautam after all the evidence is gathered and statements recorded, the prosecutor said.
The judge deferred the hearing on the anticipatory bail plea of Gautam for Tuesday.
Former Mis Mauritius Viveka Babajee killed herself by hanging from the ceiling at her Continental Towers flat in suburban Bandra on June 25.
Her mortal remains were consigned to flames at Juhu crematorium on Monday in the presence of friends from the fashion industry, her mother and sisters.
