CHENNAI: The 41-year-old Tiruvallur district secretary of Puratchi Bharatham party was attacked by an unidentified gang at Koyambedu on Friday. Police suspected it to be an act of revenge.
Police said James of Vellavedu in Poonamallee, the Tiruvallur district secretary for Puratchi Bharatham party, was returning home from a relative's wedding at Aminjikarai. He was in his car along with his wife Jagata, president of Koodapakkam town panchayat, and other relatives. James got down from his car to attend to nature's call at a signal at Koyembedu when an unidentified gang of four that arrived in a car attacked James with weapons and injured him.When the man raised an alarm, his relatives in the car came out and noticing them, the gang fled leaving behind their vehicle. James was admitted to a private hospital.
Police recovered the gang's vehicle and began investigations. Police suspected that the attack could be an act of revenge as James was reportedly one of the accused in the murder of a realtor Senthil Kumar in 2006. Investigations were on to find out if it was an attack to avenge the murder. Meanwhile, it is reported that Senthil Kumar's brother Selvakumar's house at Ambedkar Colony, Koodapakkam, too was attacked on Friday.A 31yearold woman was found murdered at Neelankarai on Friday. Police have detained a construction labourer, who is suspected to have attempted to misbehave with her, in connection with the murder.Neelankarai police, who began investigations, detained Mohan (36) of Madurantakam, another construction labourer living in Neelankarai, for questioning. Police suspected that Mohan had an eye on Devi and on Friday, he had attempted to misbehave with her. When the woman threa tened him that she would inform her husband, the man had reportedly stabbed her and fled with gold earrings to make it look like it was a murder for gain.A 20yearold engineering student drowned in a lake during a visit to a private theme park at Nazarethpet on Saturday.
