Manish Kumar had topped the intermediate science exam in July.

Ranchi: He was declared the science topper in Jharkhand's Class 12 board exams, with a super 96 in maths. But a re-evaluation of his answer sheets after disbelieving students raised a hue and cry saw him failing in the subject - with a poor 24.

According to an official, Manish Kumar had topped in the intermediate science examination when the results were declared in July.

After the results were declared by the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC), some of the students kicked up a ruckus over Manish's marks.

His father Niranjan Kumar is a senior official of the JAC, which conducted the examination. Manish had secured 426 out of 600 marks - with 96 in maths, 71 in English and 88 in physics.

After the students protested, the JAC decided to re-evaluate the answer sheets of Manish. The results were declared on Friday.

The revised results failed Manish in maths.

"In the revised result, Manish has secured only 24 marks in maths, which was 96 in the results. In English and physics, he has secured only 60 and 73 marks respectively against 71 and 88 earlier. We have found some teachers guilty in forging the results and will soon take action against them," a senior JAC official told IANS.

Asked about the possible role of Manish's father in influencing the results, he said: "We cannot rule out Manish's father having used his influence. It will be probed."
