Protesting trainee doctors and medical students of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital demanded resignations of top officials of the Kolkata police and top members of hospital administration.
“Resignation of the current Principal of RGKMCH, the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, the Officer in Charge, Tala, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Kolkata, for their shameful response to the mob attack on the eve of Independence Day,” the doctors listed in their list of demands.
The protesting doctors said that they want central forces immediate deployment of central forces “to ensure security in light of multiple security lapses (particularly the mob attack on the eve of Independence Day), along with the gross inefficiency and ineffectiveness of on-duty Kolkata Police staff”.
They also said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who have now taken over the investigation of the rape-murder of the trainee doctor at the hospital, should arrest all culprits with proper evidence and publish a press release confirming the same.
The protesting students have also called the ex-principal, the medical superintendent cum vice-principal, the dean of students Affairs, the head of the department of Chest Medicine Department and the assistant superintendent who was on duty on that day to tender their resignation and issue a letter of apology.
They have asked officials at Swasthya Bhavan, the building that houses West Bengal’s health department, to answer why the resignation of the former principal Sandip Ghosh was not accepted in the first instance.
Doctors, nursing staff and medical students of RG Kar Memorial College and Hospital have been protesting demanding justice for the rape-murder of the trainee doctor and have said that they will not rejoin duties until the case is resolved.
