Miami Beach, Florida: Tropical singer and songwriter Juan Luis Guerra led the nominations on Wednesday for the Latin Grammy Awards with five, while Puerto Rico's Ricky Martin and Calle13 took four each.
Guerra's nominations included Album of the Year, best Merengue album for La Llave De Mi Corazon ('The Key to My Heart'), Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Tropical Song.
"It's a great honour. It's a great privilege," Guerra said. He brought the Dominican Republic's bachata rhythms to world recognition, but his work mixes tropical rhythms, rock, jazz and even gospel. Asked where his inspiration came from, Guerra said it varied.
"I pick up the guitar and begin to work," the Dominican native said. "Sometimes one feels these tremendous butterflies inside and one has to put them out there."
Calle 13's nominations included Album of the Year and Best Urban Music Album for Residente o Visitante ('Resident or Visitor'). Martin was nominated for Best Album, Best Male Pop Vocal, Vest Long Video and Record of the Year for Tu Recuerdo ('Your Memory').
"To have other musicians react with the same appreciation that fans have had for the 'MTV Unplugged' album is incredibly rewarding," Martin said.
Others to receive multiple nominations included Spain's Miguel Bose, Colombian alt-rockers the Aterciopelados, Puerto Rican reggaeton star Daddy Yankee and veteran Brazilian performer Caetano Veloso.
Beyonce and Shakira were also recognised for their duet Beautiful Liar.
Guerra was previously announced as the winner of the Latin Grammy's Person of the Year Award. The Dominican native won for his best-selling sensual and spiritual tropical music, and for his work with orphans and abandoned children.
Fellow Latin Grammy nominee and tropical singer Elvis Crespo said he was thrilled for Guerra.
"Juan Luis Guerra is a musical legend," Crespo said. "He doesn't just deserve five nominations, he deserves all the nominations that can be given. He has made an incredible contribution to Latin music, and especially to the music I do, merengue."
Last year, Shakira dominated the Latin Grammy awards, with four trophies, including album of the year for 'Fijacion Oral Vol. 1' (Oral Fixation Vol. 1).
That show aired exclusively in Spanish for the first time on Univision and reached 11 million viewers in the US, with nearly 100 million viewers worldwide. This year, the eighth annual Latin Grammy Awards show will be held for the first time in Las Vegas, broadcast live November 8. Previously, the event was held in Miami, Los Angeles and New York.
