CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has ordered an increase in food allowance for students in State-run hostels besides those operated by government-approved private hostels and homes run by voluntary organisations. The move would benefit students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward, Most Backward Classes and Denotified Tribes.In an official release, the State government said Jayalalithaa has ordered that the allowance for students run by the State Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department hostels and residential schools be hiked from `450 to `650. For college students, the assistance will be hiked from `550 to `750. The move would benefit 1,20,015 students in hostels and residential schools. The new allowance will also be applicable to 1,500 additional seats that will be created in hostels. Also, 5,438 students in private homes authorised by the State would be eligible for the increase. This would entail an annual additional expenditure of `25.19 crore.Similarly, 74,302 (BC, MBC, DT) students in 1,238 hostels and 1,948 students (BC, MBC,DT) in 39 private hostels would get the hike.
