Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday ordered the allocation of Rs 2,603 crore for the construction, upgradation and maintenance of the road network across the State.
This amount would be used to improve the road network in rural and urban areas, and includes a Rs 315.95 crore component for the construction and improvement of road connectivity to villages that have an SC/ST population of over 40 per cent. The allocation comes after the Chief Minister set aside Rs 3,793 crore for the purpose in the last financial year, a government statement said.
The amount would be used to fund a total of 1,680 projects across the State, covering 2,571 km of various kinds of roads and 85 bridges. These would also include the improvement of existing State highways and the construction of new highways, bridges, traffic flyovers, underpasses and pedestrian overbridges. The announcement also noted that Rs 340.68 crore had been set aside for the improvement of overall road and bridge infrastructure in and around Chennai. Upgradation of key flyovers at Kathipara, Koyambedu and Chennai Airport and the beautification of pedestrian subways along Mount Road would also be taken up.
