TIRUNELVELI: The Tirunelveli police on Sunday confiscated counterfeit currency equivalent to Rs 43 lakh in the denomination of Rs1,000 from a gang of six persons.SP Vijayendra Bidari told reporters the police had received information that counterfeit notes were being circulated to Kerala from Tenkasi in Tirunelveli. To nab the racketeers, three teams were formed. The first to be nabbed was mastermind S Rathinasamy (42) of Ainthamkattalai Street, from whom Rs15 lakh counterfeit notes in the denomination of Rs1,000 were seized. Police stumbled upon the racketeers soon after the arrest of Rathinasamy and a series of arrests were made on the same day. “After interrogating Rathinasamy, the team arrested D Jeyapal (31) of Mela Megnanapuram and seized Rs9 lakh fake notes from him,” the SP said. Subsequently, G Venus Orbit (32) of Sivanthipuram and V Kumar (30) of Pungampatti were also arrested with counterfeit currency worth Rs10 lakh and Rs8 lakh respectively. “The team arrested M Socrates (38) of Kallidaikurichi, who is running Tamil Nadu Press, where the fake notes where cut and Rs1-lakh notes seized,” he said. His assistant Arockyaraj was also held. Meanwhile, Anandavel alias Sankar, Vasanthan and Prasanna are absconding.
