MADURAI: Holding the State and the school liable for the death of a third standard student, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has asked the State to pay Rs 5 lakh and the school Rs 2 lakh as compensation for the student’s family.Mohammed Asif, a student of Little Flower Matriculation School at Tirunelveli, drowned in a swimming pool on June 27, 2009, due to the negligence of the lifeguards at the pool and the teachers who had accompanied him. Since the pool was in charge of Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority, the State gave the family a compensation of Rs 1 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.M Shahul Hameed, the aggrieved father of the deceased, urged Tirunelveli Collector for an enhanced compensation. As his request was turned down, he moved the HC Bench.Meanwhile, the School and the District Sports Officer, in different counter-affidavits, blamed each other for student’s death.
