Around 100 bandh supporters including the functionaries of Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry were rounded up as a dawn to dusk Jamshedpur bandh called by SCCI remained peaceful on Thursday.
The bandh, which was being observed following the expiry of 48-hour ultimatum served by them to the district administration to apprehend the culprits, was called by the apex industrial body in protest against the killing of a rice merchant Vinod Agarwal on last Saturday.
All financial institutions including banks, petrol pumps, business establishments, shop and markets downed their shutter to express solidarity against the killing of Agarwal.
The road traffic was also hit by the bandh but the train services remained unaffected, Railway sources said. Barring sporadic incidents of smashing of glasspanes of some vehicles including a bus in Mango, the bandh was peaceful and spontaneous, official sources said.
The bandh was supported by various organisations and political parties including Congress, BJP and JVM (P). Expressing his gratitude towards people for extending support to the bandh, Suresh Sonthalia, vice-president of SCCI, expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the steel city.
He warned that if immediate steps were not taken to improve the situation, no investors will come to Jharkhand.
Meanwhile, police rounded up about 100 bandh supporters including Sonthalia and Bharat Vasani, secretary of SCCI, activists of BJP, Congress, ABVP.
