CHENNAI: Leprosy-affected people have now got a new lease of life, thanks to Self Help Groups (SHG) started by the Ramakrishna Mutt, which has empowered them economically.On Friday, the Ramakrishna Mutt, along with their volunteers, organised a celebration to commemorate the fifth anniversary of SHGs for leprosy-affected people (LAP). “The SHGs we started through the Ramakrishana Mutt for the leprosy-affected people was transformational. For the people who had absolutely no job options, these SHGs, over a period of time, had given some economic independence,” said a long-time volunteer with the Mutt.He added, “For people who are isolated and scattered otherwise, the SHGs have given a chance, a platform to meet others who have similar challenges and they were able to exchange notes on the best business practices.”In the past five years, they have given loans to the tune of Rs 75,000. This money has benefited 120 leprosy-affected people, who have started small scale businesses. They put up a stall exhibiting the thingss that they sell.In the morning session, 150 people were screened for ENT, general ailments and also for dental problems. Prof Sivakumar, HOD of Public Health Dentistry of Ragas Dental College, said, “Most of the leprosy-affected people have difficulty in using their hands to brush. But for them, it is very important that they maintain a good dental hygiene to prevent tooth decay.”Dr P Gunasekaran, Deputy Director, Department of Virology, King Institute of Preventive Medicine, who is doing a pilot Amnion therapy for healing ulcers in the leprosy-affected, made a presentation.
