Six policemen were injured in an attack by some locals in the Loni area in Ghaziabad when they had gone there to arrest a person who was allegedly involved in power theft, police said.
The incident took place in the Baag Ranap area at around 12 noon when the police team reached there to arrest one Suraj following a complaint by the electricity department. Police had to resort to a mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd, which also blocked the road and held up traffic in the area for several hours.
A case has been registered against some unidentified persons in this regard, police said. "Suraj had fled by the time the police team reached his house, but the appearance of the law and order personnel got some of the locals agitated and they suddenly started pelting stones at them. "The police team had to run for cover to save themselves and some of the personnel sustained injuries in the attack. The situation was brought under control only after additional force was called in," said a senior police officer.
The six policemen, who suffered injuries to their heads and hands, were taken to a hospital from where they were discharged after first aid, he added.
