Demanding the Central government to stop training being given to two Sri Lankan defence personnel in the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington, MDMK cadre blocked two trains at Podanur on Thursday.
Tight security was posted at Podanur and Coimbatore stations after the party had announced that its workers would block trains.
Activists blocked the Coimbatore-Mangalore Fast Passenger train at Podanur for nearly 15 minutes. Even as the police removed them from the place, another group blocked the Palakkad-Triuchy Passenger train for about 20 minutes.
Police prevented the cadre from blocking trains at the Coimbatore railway junction as the partymen were arrested when they attempted to enter the premises. “Sri Lanka is a country which killed thousands of innocent Tamils during the Eelam wars.
Terming such a country as a friendly nation can never be accepted by people of Tamil Nadu. But the Centre is unmindful of the sentiments of Tamils by allowing Lankans to undergo training in the State itself,” V Easwaran, MDMK district secretary said.
Protestors Try to Block Trains
Cuddalore: Members of Naam Tamizhar Iyakkam in the district were arrested for attempting to block trains in Cuddalore, Chidambaram and Vriddhachalam on Thursday condemning the central government’s nod for Sri Lankan armymen to undergo training in India.
Protestors blamed Centre for being insensitive towards the sentiments of Tamil people.
They raised slogans condemning Union Minister of State for Defence Pallam Raju, for his statement that India would continue to train SL army officers.
Jaladheepan, district coordinator of the party, said, “Even after stiff resistance from Tamil Nadu government and Tamils, Centre is not stopping the training of Lankan defence officers. This rail roko is just the beginning. The Lankan army officers should be sent back immediately, otherwise we will picket all central government offices here.
Pallam Raju said that Sri Lanka is India’s friend. How could a country that is killing our fishermen become friendly to us?”
Law Students’ stir
Students of the Government Law College in Katpadi staged a rail roko at the Katpadi railway junction on Thursday, protesting against the training provided to Sri Lankan defence personnel at the Defence Services Staff College in Nilgiris.
The students gathered on the second platform of the railway station around 11 am and blocked the Intercity Express. The students also condemned Union Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju’s statement that Sri Lankan defence personnel would continue to receive training in India as Sri Lanka was a “friendly nation”.
Lawyers Protest

The protest, led by Association Secretary, Jayakumar, called for a halt to the training provided to the SL military officials at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington.
