CHENNAI: Rotary Club of Anna Nagar, Madras, presented its ‘Community Service Award’ to V Rajagopal, a social activist from Anna Nagar West, in appreciation of his services. He had helped  improve civic amenities and control traffic at the Officers’ Colony. In a function organised at Koyambedu recently, Rtn. P P Praveen K Mehra, District Advisor - Vocational Service, gave away the award and a citation to Rajagopal.Besides being a President of Anna Nagar Western Extn (Phase II) Residents Welfare Association for the sixth consecutive term, Rajagopal is also known for his social service activities in the locality. After his relentless efforts as president of the residents’ association, about 10 grounds of land belonging to the Ambattur Municipality was converted as a mega park with all modern facilities for locals. The particular piece of land had remained an eyesore among the residential locality and due to its bad condition, anti-social elements used it as den for all illegal activities. As part of his awareness programmes, Rajagopal was instrumental in organising several health camps for cardiology and eye-related ailments in the locality during the last 11 years.Although Rajagopal’s passion to become a police officer did not come through, he enrolled as a member of Citizens for Safe Roads in 2003 and managed flow of traffic at Officers’ Colony-Ambattur Industrial Estate Road intersection during peak hours every day.Again, Rajagopal relentlessly pursed the locals’ demand for erecting an automated traffic signal at the junction and got it installed a few years ago.
