KOCHI: The country’s first public-private partnership incubator, ‘Startup Village’, at Kinfra Hi-Tech Park, Kalamassery will be formally inaugurated by Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan on Sunday. The startup village is not only incubating 1000 tech-startups over 10 years but also nurturing more than 1000 trees in hi-tech parks.A unique green initiative, ‘Entrepreneur Garden’ will also be launched. Kris who is also the chief mentor of the ‘Startup Village’ will launch the initiative by planting a banyan tree."'Startup village’ is an attempt to create a complete technology ecosystem by changing the education policy, incubating ideas, accelerating them with specific industry support and angel funding at one location for the first time in India. The garden is an effort to help balance the ecosystem by growing trees,” said Sanjeev Vijayakumar, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the village.Orchids, evergreen trees and banyan will be grown in a one-acre tract of land.The incubator modelled on Silicon Valley is aimed at transforming Kerala into a Silicon Coast and commence the search for a billion-dollar tech startup from campuses across the country.The village is being jointly set up by the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and state-run Technopark in collaboration with MobME Wireless-a private firm which began as a student startup and is among the top ten emerging telecom companies in the country.The telecom and information technology industry is supporting the initiative in different capacities. Former NASSCOM chief Kiran Karnik, Cellular Opertor Association Director-General Rajan Mathews, UrbanTouch.com CEO Abhishek Goyal, former Yahoo India Research and Development CEO Sharad Sharma, Dell India MD Ganesh Lakshminarayan, CEO of Mindtree K K Natarajan, Global Board Member of KPMG Arun Kumar and Ravi Pillai and local IT entrepreneurs among others are joining the project as mentors and investors.
