It is very unfortunate that the State Women’s Commission (SWC) has not even spoken to the victims of the homestay attack, said National Commission for Women (NCW) member Shamina Shafiq on Thursday.
She spoke to reporters at Circuit House before visiting Morning Mist homestay. “I have spoken to the two victims and they revealed that no one from the SWC contacted them,” she said.
She refused to comment on the SWC interim report and said that she would like to consult each victim and their parents before filing the report to the NCW. She said the Commission was waiting for the SWC report and the Police Department’s Action Taken Report (ATR). “As the Commission has not received the ATR so far, it asked me to visit the spot and prepare a report,” she said.
She gathered information from two victims namely Vijay Kumar and Gurudatt Kamath and also spoke to the reporters who were present during the homestay attack. Later, she visited Morning Mist at Padil and spoke to its owner Loretto Rebello. Meanwhile, some local women submitted a memorandum to the NCW member demanding that Morning Mist be shut down as it was functioning illegally.
‘I Will Not Pay Tax’
After Shafiq’s visit to the homestay, Loretto Rebello told reporters: “It is not a homestay as it does not have the facilities and is not used for commercial purposes. I give it for birthday celebrations to people known to me.” She added that she would not pay tax to Mangalore City Corporation or to the Tourism Department.
