Ranchi: Work in 39 of 58 collieries of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) were hit while production of coal from Bharat Coking Coal Limited-operated mines dropped by 50 per cent in Jharkhand on the first day of the nationwide strike by trade unions against the Centre's 'disinvestment' policy and restructure of Coal India Limited (CIL).
"Work was hit at 39 of the total 58 collieries under CCL. While 11 collieries functioned fully, work at eight has been partial," sources in the CCL said. They claimed that only 41 per cent of the total workforce participated in the strike called by INTUC, AITUC, HMS and BMS.
BCCL's Senior Public Relation Officer RR Prasad said in Dhanbad that 50 per cent production was hampered following the strike. The General Secretary of Rashriya Colliery Mazdoor Sangh (RCMS) AK Jha, however, claimed hundred per cent success.
"The Centre has to give up privatisation policy of the CIL in the interest of miners and coal industry," he said. RCMS is an affiliated body of the INTUC.
