CHENNAI: It is not the first time that Surily Goel has worked in association with Preity Zinta, as far as her styling and costumes are concerned, nor is it the first time that Surily has done complete styling for a celebrity host, anchor or judge on a reality/talk show. But what probably makes this fashion designer’s styling for a celebrity unique is the fact that she strikes an amazing balance between the persona of the celebrity, bearing in mind their individual preferences, and also keeping in mind the mood of the show.Having studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, and after launching her own range of clothing titled ‘Surily’, the fashion designer forayed into Bollywood with her styling for Preity Zinta for Salaam Namaste and thereafter again in Jaan-E-Mann. Her association with the actress is back on the new chat show on UTV Stars’ Up, Close and Personal with PZ and will soon also be styling her look in Preity’s own production title, Ishq In Paris. Speaking about her experience on styling for films and for television shows, Surily says, “When you are styling for an actor in a film, you are doing it based on the character the person plays. The look of the actor is based on the kind of role he or she portrays, based on its storyline. But in the case of a TV show – a reality show or a chat show, it is very important to keep the comfort factor of the celebrity host in mind. Then, there is also the ambience for which we had to contrast the colours. The couch and lounge in Up, Close and Personal, for instance, has shades of pink, red and gold tones which is why we refrained from using florals and prints, gold shades, blue and pink. On the other hand, we have experimented with black and white. Outfits have been sourced from international brands like Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, etc. I have also done styling for Preity during her earlier reality show, Guinness World Records. Preity is bubbly and we had to give her a comfortable, classy and international look on her show.” Surily has also done styling for celebrities on reality shows like Karan Johar (Koffee with Karan Season 1) and Isha Koppikkar for (Nach Baliye). She is currently also styling for Hrithik Roshan (Just Dance on Star One). “Here on this show, it is important to keep in mind when he is performing that we give him a hip-hop —rock star kind of look and when he is not, a more semi-formal look, wearing a suit, open-collared shirt and a loosely knotted scarf kind of tie. At the time the music video was being made, the look we had designed had to be something outstanding for a big star like him.”The designer has displayed her collections in Chennai, at Evoluzione, and states and that she has not had the opportunity of styling a South Indian star as yet, other than Mahesh Babu. Having worked and trained with Manish Malhotra, Surily says, “I have always experimented with contemporary western wear, which has been my forte. But gradually I will be venturing into desi creations as well.”
