Chennai: The number of protestors killed in the police firing in Ramanthapuram district on Sunday has risen to five. The clash between the police and dalit protestors took place after their leader was arrested.
Several police vehicles have also been damaged in the clash.
The protests then spread to Madurai as well - where two people were injured in police firing after a mob attacked a police party.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the families of those who died in the firing.
Condemning the violence, she added that the police opened fire in self-defence after the mob attacked them with petrol bombs and torched police vehicles.
The incident is said to have occured at around 1 pm on Sunday when the dalits had gathered around Ramnathpuram for memorial function of a dalit leader.
