BANGALORE: Former Chief Justice of India, Justice M N Venkatachalaiah on Friday bemoaned over eroding values which are inherited by them for many centuries. Speaking at the Central Excise Day here, he said, “The necessity of science and technology in augmenting the industrial growth leading to a good economy and high GDP.I congratulate the department over its performance in revenue collection over the years and it reflects the lengthy strides taken by the department. But I am disappointed with the disproportionate collection of taxes compared to the general prosperity in the country”. Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Bangalore, Joy Kumari Chander informed that the department has taken several initiatives to simplify tax policy and procedures to make the tax compliance easier.She mentioned about (ACES) Automation in Central Excise and Service Tax, an initiative to bring transparency in working of the department. She highlighted the achievements of the Central excise and service tax formations on the revenue collection as well as the performance in key result areas.Central Excise, Service Tax and Customs Departments have adopted a Citizen Charter to ensure taxes are collected on fair, judicial and transparent manner laying down the performance delivery standard to improve organization efficiency.The Central Excise Zone, Bangalore has been given the target of Rs 6350 crore under Central Excise and Rs 5695 crore in Service Tax for the year 2011-12.The revenue collected under Central Excise during the current year up to the month of January, 2012 is Rs 4902.5 crore and under Service Tax is Rs 4598.7 crore showing increase of 20 per cent under Central Excise and 36 per cent under Service Tax as compared to revenue during corresponding period of last year.Hariprasad, Intelligence Officer, DGCEI, Bangalore who has been awarded Presidential award, was felicitated. H G Surendra, Superintendent, Bangalore-II Commissionerate was also feted for his outstanding contribution in the field of sports. Roop Kumar Dutta, IPS, Director General of Police, Karnataka was the Guest of Honour.
