Telangana Extends Coronavirus Lockdown Till May 29 as Positive Cases in State Approach 1,100-mark
The state government has also decided not to give any relaxations in Hyderabad and five other red zone districts.

New Delhi: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Tuesday announced the lockdown in the state has been extended till May 29, saying it cannot take the risk by lifting it at a time when it has made considerable progress in controlling the spread of the coronavirus.

Telangana becomes the first state in the country to extend the lockdown beyond May 17 announced by the Centre last week.

At a press conference after the state cabinet meeting, Rao said the public in the state should complete the purchase of all essential items by 6pm and be back home. “There will be a curfew in the state from 7pm. If anyone is found outside, the police will initiate action,” he said.

The state government also decided not to give any relaxations in Hyderabad and five other red zone districts.

Rao said while the guidelines issued by the Centre allowing economic activity in orange and green zones will be followed, no activity, except construction, will be allowed in Hyderabad and other red zone districts.

"Only cement, steel, hardware and electrical shops will be allowed to open in red zone districts," he said.

Rao said while all shops can open in mandal headquarters and villages, only 50% of the shops will be allowed to open in municipal towns in green and orange districts. The shops can remain open from 10 am to 6 pm. He said he would review the situation on May 15 and decide whether or not to give relaxations in red zones.

Rao said the state on Tuesday reported 11 new cases, taking its tally to 1,096. He said 43 people were discharged on Tuesday and the number of active cases now stands at 439.

Rao said the state is fully equipped with medical equipment and ready for any eventuality.

“People should cooperate with us. Elders above 65 years of age should not come out if there is no medical emergency,” he said. “Children should also not be allowed outside.”
