Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters, will be the new venue for Sunday’s TESO meet, which was originally planned at the sprawling YMCA grounds in Royapettah. The change was announced on Saturday evening after a day of high drama, which unfolded at multiple venues in the city.
It was a hectic day for the DMK as it ran from pillar to post to get permission for the Eelam Tamils Rights Protection Conference at the YMCA grounds, after the City Police, citing 11 reasons, said around 1.30 am that it cannot be allowed.
DMK president M Karunanidhi set the ball in motion by going into a huddle with senior party leaders and announcing that the party would explore all legal avenues. Later the party filed a writ petition before the Madras High Court.
Justice Paul Vasanthakumar, after hearing the arguments for an hour, said he could not hear the petition since the case was already pending before a division bench. He then referred the matter to the Chief Justice.
A few hours later, it was claimed that a division bench was being constituted to hear the petition. But till 8 pm, the bench did not sit for the hearing and later it was told that the bench before which the case is pending would sit on Sunday. Throughout the day, DMK cadre thronged the YMCA grounds, where final preparations were on. Even some leaders like M K Stalin and Ponmudy visited it.
