HYDERABAD: The fifth visa application centre of the Thai consulate in India was inaugurated on Thursday by the Royal Thai Consulate General of Chennai, Chanchai Charanvatnakit. The visa application centre set up by the consular services company VFS Global will be functional from June 6 at Green Lands, Ameerpet.Tourists to Thailand will be able to file their visa applications from Hyderabad instead of Chennai consulate and the service aims to process applications within three working days. However, the visa-on-arrival facility for tourists will continue as before.“We would like to see more visitors from Andhra Pradesh and want it to be a two-way exchange of culture,” said Charanvatnakit. He also referred to possible business partnerships between Thai companies and the pharmaceuticals industry in Hyderabad.The centre has been set up to woo both tourists and business travellers, keeping in mind the growing number of visitors to the country from southern India. According to Thai Airways, the number of visitors to Bangkok from Hyderabad in 2010 was 45,000. The number is expected to increase by five per cent by the end of 2011, said Suladda Sarutilavan, assistant director of Thai Tourism Authority during the inauguration. Other centres in India for processing Thai visas applications are located in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.
