VELLORE: Three bullock carts, lorries and an earthmover were seized on Monday and Tuesday, during raids conducted in various places in Vellore.Ambalur police during night patrolling, spotted three bullock carts carrying loads of sand at the Palar riverbed in Azhinjapuram. On enquiry, it came to light that sand was being carried without license.Following this, the cops seized the bullock carts and arrested Raja (41), Perumal (43) and Ramamurthy (42) in connection with this.In other incident, officials attached to the revenue department conducted a vehicle check at the bypass road near Ranipet Palar on Tuesday and stopped three lorries for enquiry on suspicion.Later, it was learnt that the lorries were carrying sand illegally. The three lorries were immediately seized.During another search, a private godown which stocked sand at VC Mottur was identified. An earthmover was also seized from there and officials are investigating the case to nab those connected with the private godown.Two women Charred to Death in Separate IncidentsTwo women were charred to death in separate incidents, while cooking in kitchen on Monday. On Dec 25, Parimala (30) of Muthur village near Arakkonam tried to light up the pump stove, when the flames caught her saree and engulfed her. She was immediately admitted to the Arakkonam GH, later shifted to Kilpauk hospital, where she succumbed to injuries on Monday.Arakkonam taluk police filed a case in this regard.In a similar incident, Utharani(25) of Mullipattu village near Arni, received burns on Dec 23, while she tried to light up the stove.She was rushed to the Arni GH and later shifted to the Vellore GH where she died on Monday. Arni town police filed a case.475 kg Ration Rice Seized, Three Arrested As many as 475 kg of ration rice that was allegedly smuggled to Andhra Pradesh, was seized on Tuesday.Based on a tip-off that ration rice was being smuggled to Andhra Pradesh in auto, the cops attached to the food cell rushed to the old bypass road. Seeing the cops, the auto driver and a woman in the auto threw all the rice bags and fled the scene. Later, Nagini(34), Suresh(30) of Chittoor and auto driver Rathishkumar (20) of Kakithapattarai in Vellore were arrested and the auto was also seized.
