New Delhi: In its first chargesheet in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case, the Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday told a court in Ahmedabad that the 19-year-old girl along with three others was killed by the Gujarat Police in a fake encounter.
Here is the sequence of events in the Ishrat Jahan case:
June 15, 2004: Ishrat Jahan and three others killed in a police encounter in the outskirts of Ahmedabad. Police claimed they were members of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba on a mission to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
September 2009: Ahmedabad Metropolitan Magistrate SP Tamang called the encounter fake.
August 2010: The Gujarat High Court asked the Supreme Court-appointed SIT headed by former CBI director RK Raghavan (investigating the Gujarat riots) to take up the case.
September 2010: The High Court constituted a new SIT after the RK Raghavan-headed SIT expressed its inability to undertake the probe. The new SIT is headed by one IPS officer from outside Gujarat and two Gujarat cadre officers Mohan Jha and Satish Verma.
November 2010: The Supreme Court rejected the Gujarat government's plea challenging the High Court order to form the new SIT.
December 2010: The three-member SIT began investigation in the case and started recording statements of the witnesses, police officials involved.
January 28, 2011: SIT member Satish Varma filed an affidavit stating that the encounter was a fake one. He also accused other two members of not allowing the probe to be done in an unbiased manner.
April 8, 2011: The Gujarat High Court division bench warned the state authorities that the court will hand over the probe to central agencies like CBI or NIA if the state does not allow SIT to probe without hindrance.
December 2011: The High Court ordered CBI probe in the case.
February 2013: The CBI arrested Gujarat IPS GL Singhal, the first arrest in the case.
The detailed probe by the SIT and subsequently by the CBI did not find any link between the dead and the LeT.
May 2013: CBI court issued an arrest warrant against Gujarat ADG PP Pandey.
May 2013: IB Special Director Rajendra Kumar summoned for interrogation.
June 2013: CBI removed Verma from probe team, summoned Rajendra Kumar.
June 28: Union Home Ministry refused to sanction Rajendra Kumar's prosecution.
July 3: CBI filed its first chargesheet in the case in an Ahmedabad court, said Ishrat and three others were killed in a fake encounter.
