CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B S Gnanadesikan on Wednesday urged the Union government to probe the background and source of funding of the protestors of the Koodankulam N-plant.Addressing party workers after formally taking charge as chief of the state unit of the Congress, Gnanadesikan wondered how agitations could come up all of a sudden. Supporting Union Minister V Narayanasamy’s view that the source of funding for the protestors should be probed, he also demanded that their antecedents be looked into by the Centre. The TNCC would however strive to allay the genuine apprehensions of the local people, he added. On the alleged attacks on fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, he said the Centre was duty bound to stop it if the charges were true. “I will urge the Centre to take steps to find out the truth,” he said.Grand showWhen Gnanadesikan took charge as the state Congress chief at the sprawling Satyamurthy Bhavan grounds here, it was a grand show of strength of Union Minster G K Vasan’s camp Vasan’s followers turned up in large numbers leading to intermittent traffic congestion on GP Road. The party workers were treated to a traditional lunch to celebrate the swearing in of Gnanadesikan. Against the background of dissidence during his tenure, outgoing chief K V Thangkabalu mentioned that only a ‘disciplined Congress’ would get people’s endorsement. Gnanadesikan said party leaders should tour the state to strengthen the party. “Tell them about the Centre’s achievements — JNNURM scheme and 108 ambulance service,” he said. He reiterated that he would seek the support of all sections and leaders of the party.
