The Ministry of Tourism is all set to act against the harassment of tourists at various tourist spots in the country. Guidelines have been issued for forming a Tourist Security Organisation (TSO).
The Tourism Department of each state will be given directions to report incidents, including minor cases of harassment of tourists, and compile a database of such incidents.
Furthermore, the guidelines for the formation of the TSO have also been issued. “The TSO will comprise ex-servicemen, and was formulated by the Ministry of Tourism in consultation with the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home and Directorate General of Resettlements,” the sources said. However, in the state, the advent of the TSO will be delayed since the tourism police have been operational here.
The Ministry of Tourism is likely to press for the formation of the TSO in the states which still do not have any agency to provide security to tourists.
Moreover, the Union Ministry of Tourism, along with stakeholders including regional level tourist guides licensed by the Ministry of Tourism, has adopted the code of conduct for ‘safe and honourable tourism’.
This set of guidelines is to let tourism activities to be undertaken with respect to basic rights like dignity, safety and freedom from exploitation of both tourists and local residents, and in particular, women and children.
