KOCHI: In an ignominous first for Ernakulam district, the police have arrested two persons for illegally selling Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). This is only the second LSD case to be registered in the entire state. The city shadow police arrested two persons, Russel, 33, native of Mankavu and Ashish, 32, native of Malaparambu on Sunday.Four stamps of LSD, 43 gm hashish and several packets of ganja were seized from the arrested men. The police nabbed the duo from Palarivattom area while both were attempting to sell the narcotic products. The LSD and other narcotic products were brought from Goa. Upon questioning by the police, the duo admitted that a person from Kozhikode had supplied them the LSD from Goa.“LSD cases are very rarely registered in the state. But it is a different fact altogether that the demand for the drug is high in the city. The use of LSD is very common in Bangalore, Goa and Mumbai. The drug is used in the form of narcotic stickers that are placed on the tongue.“The drug-induced high lasts for up to 13 hours. A single LSD stamp would cost more than Rs 5,000. We could only trace a single case in last 15 years. The sale and use of LSD are banned under section 22 (B) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.“Any person found selling or using LSD would invite punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of `1 lakh,” a Narcotics official said.A police official said that LSD is a highly addictive drug and mostly used by hard-core drug addicts.“We have intensified the drive against narcotic products. The two persons arrested are being quizzed intensively and people behind such activities will also be caught,” the police official added.
