UID project to be over by January

Upsetting the initial plans of the Education Department, the numbering of students for the Unique Identification Number (UID) project is likely to get over by January 2013 only.

A status report filed by the IT@School Project to the Director of Public Instructions on Friday points out that 50 per cent of the work remains to be done in majority of the districts.

In the beginning of the academic year, Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb had announced that the headcount in schools, done usually on the sixth working day, will be replaced by the UID scheme, which will get over in four months.

However, it seems the enrolling agencies- Keltron and Akshaya- have to sweat it out for another three months before the entire 12,000 schools could be covered.

DPI A Shajahan had asked the IT@School Project to furnish the status of UID implementation in each school. The report drawn up by the IT@School said that only two districts-Ernakulam and Palakad- had completed more than 60 per cent work. In Ernakulam, the UID scheme has covered 64 per cent students while in Palakad it is 65 per cent.

The details of the implementation in Thrissur, Kasargod and Malappuram are yet to be compiled. The approximate figures across Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Idukki and Kozhikode are 31, 33, 32 and 30 per cent respectively.
