London: Dozens of climate-change protesters climbed on to the roof of the Houses of Parliament on Sunday and unveiled banners, raising security concerns the day before legislators return from their summer break.
Police estimated the number of protesters at 20-30, while environmental organisation Greenpeace, which said it organised the action, said 55 volunteers had occupied the roof and planned to stay there overnight to greet lawmakers.
''With just 60 days go until the critical climate summit in Copenhagen -- which faces a very real chance of failure as things stand -- Britain has yet to show true commitment to making the process a success,'' Greenpeace said on its website.
The United Nations hopes to bring 190 governments together in Denmark in December to finalise a deal on greenhouse gas emissions to replace the provisions of the Kyoto Protocol expiring in 2012.
Police said no arrests had been made, and that they were speaking to protesters.
Past direct action at parliament, including a similar climb on to the roof last year by environmentalists opposed to an expansion of London's Heathrow airport, have caused lawmakers to query security levels.
