Greater Noida: Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel grabbed his 13th pole of the season in the inaugural Indian Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit on Sunday.
By doing so, Vettel equalled the record of the maximum number of pole positions in a season held by Alain Prost and the late Ayrton Senna.
It was also a record for Red Bull who claimed their 16th pole in 2011, which is the maximum in a season for any team.
Vettel secured a time of 1:24.178, ahead of teammate Mark Webber and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.
Hamilton with a time of 1:24.474 finished just behind Vettel, but due to his grid penalty that was imposed on him in the first practice session on Friday, he will start at fifth position behind McLaren teammate Jenson Button on race day.
Ferrari's Felipe Massa qualified sixth, but crashed on the final lap when his right-front suspension broke going over a curb, sending him skidding into a barrier.
Force India's Paul di Resta did better than the final practice session in the morning but could not make the Q3 and settled for 13th position after clocking 1:26.503, just behind Mercedes GP's Michael Schumacher.
India's Narain Karthikeyan did well to finish in 22nd position, just behind Hispania teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
