CUTTACK: Hotels and commercial establishments using domestic LPG cylinders have come under scrutiny as the district administration has launched a drive to curb the menace. The administration has formed a special team in coordination with the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), the Civil Supplies Wing and the Weights and Measures to search hotels, restaurants and food joints and initiate action against the violators. According to sources, use of domestic cylinders in commercial establishments has become rampant in the City thanks to unscrupulous owners and suppliers. Almost all the hotels and restaurants indulge in these violations while the small food joints and eateries are completely dependant on the domestic cylinders. The situation has come to such a pass that the bulk of the requirement at over 80 per cent is met by domestic cylinders and the rest by commercial ones. “We are targeting all the establishments and will take penal action against the violators,” Sub-Collector JP Das said. The drive, in fact, has adopted an integrated approach to not only crack down on illegal LPG use but also ensure that all the food joints, small eateries as well as restaurants are registered and have valid food licences. That they provide food of good quality and of accurate weight are also taken care of. The team includes officials from Civil Supplies Department, CMC Health Wing and Weights and Measures. A target has been set to bring all vendors under the registration fold by December. All the raids are properly recorded and followed up at regular intervals. The raids have also brought to light massive diversion of LPG cylinders into the black market. On Wednesday, the team busted an illicit refilling unit at Khan Nagar and seized about 35 cylinders along with refilling implements. The cylinders were of different companies. All the dealers and the gas agencies are now being examined, Das said.
