KOCHI: Accidents in the agriculture sector are on the rise compared to transport and industrial sectors, said Total Oil India Pvt Ltd CEO and executive director, J Prakash. He was delivering the fourth K Unnikrishnan memorial lecture on ‘Socio commercial impact of ignoring safety,’ organised by the Kochi Regional Centre of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE), on Saturday. “Since the industrial sector is more organised and safety is being given prime importance, the accident rates are on the decrease. There has not been enough research and data collection on the accidents in the agricultural sector. This is also a reason for the increase in the number of accidents,” Prakash said.IIChE Kochi centre chairman, John Minu Mathew, who presided over the function, emphasised on the role of a chemical engineer in averting industrial accidents. “Chemical engineers should focus more on collecting data, do research on industrial safety, especially in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan.”IIChE Kochi Centre vice-chairman, K F Sijo,  welcomed the gathering. Joint secretary Harinath V also spoke on the occasion. Family members of K Unnikrishnan and Cochin Shipyard Ltd chairman and managing director Commodore K Subramaniam were present.
