ATHAGARH: The swelling Mahanadi has created panic in Athagarh sub-division with reports of breaches in river embankments pouring in from Bangerisingha, Baulanga, Sampur and Kakhadi in the last three days.According to the administration sources, all four blocks, comprising 134 villages, have been badly affected along with loss of three cattle heads in Tigiria block.Unofficial sources claimed that over 500 houses had been damaged in Badamba block with 17 villages under Badanaoput and Gadadharpur gram panchayats marooned by flood water.About 12,595 hectares of farmland lay submerged.While flood water is running three feet high near Bindhanima over Khuntuni- Narsinghpur State highway, 59 boats have been pressed into service with 8,551 persons being evacuated from delta areas.The administration is distributing beaten rice, jaggery and rice among the flood victims, while cooked food is being provided through 33 free kitchens in Athagarh.Five medical teams have been deployed in the floodhit areas.Local MLA Ramesh Rout cut short his Kashmir visit and reached here on Sunday to monitor the relief work.Former MLA R P Swain and Congress leaders Piyush Mohanty and Bichitrananda Muduli too visited the flood victims.
