Who are B'wood's Best Supporting Actors?
Performers who are like pillars of strength to the main leads

In Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, audiences had a feeling that Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa overshadowed lead actor Brad Pitt. It was no surprise then, that the Austrian actor won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 2010. He did not forget to mention in his acceptance speech that without Brad Pitt, he would've been nowhere in the film. But actually, it's often the supporting actors who do just that - lend 'support' to lead actors to make a film more enriching. Let's take a look at some of Bollywood's young supporting actors and actresses.

Shahana Goswami

Shahana's performance in Rock On!! stood out and how, in front of known faces like Farhan Akhtar, Prachi Desai, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli and Luke Kenny. The actress went on to win several awards for the film. Shahana perfectly complemented Arjun Rampal's performance in the film, as the wife of a husband who gives up. She had starred in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota before. Her attempts at single roles with Ru-Ba-Ru failed, but she was appreciated in Nandita Das' Firaaq.

Arshad Warsi

After a smashing debut in Tere Mere Sapne, Arshad Warsi's B'wood career went down. The actor struck it really big after playing Circuit in the Munnabhai series. Today, Munnabhai cannot be imagined without his sidekick, Circuit. Arshad also starred in did convincing supporting roles in Golmaal and Golmaal Returns, Sunday, Krazzy 4, Kabul Express, and Dhamaal to name a few. He's also starring in Dhamaal 2, Golmaal 3 and Munnabhai Chale Amerika.

Arjun Rampal

Superhot model-turned-actor Arjun Rampal finally arrived with Rock On!! (2008) - even taking away the National Film Award for it. The actor experimented early on in his career with Moksha, and did a few films where he was noticed - Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat and Dil Hai Tumhaara – all solo. Arjun was first noticed in a multi-starrer with Aankhen, and then Don - The Chase Begins Again. He has found his league now and will be seen in important supporting roles in Rajneeti, Housefull, Ra.One, and Don 2 - The Chase Continues. Arjun was also appreciated in Om Shanti Om as the villain, and in his production The Last Lear starring Amitabh Bachchan.

Sharman Joshi

Don't go by his boyish looks – this actor knows his job well, belonging to a family of artistes. Although not too successful as a solo hero, the actor kind of just gels in with an ensemble cast. Take the example of Rang De Basanti, Golmaal and now 3 Idiots, where he delivered superb performances.

Atul Kulkarni

The actor is a powerhouse performer and an asset to any film. He has won two National Film Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Chandni Bar and Hey Ram. Atul's notable roles include Rang De Basanti, Page 3, Dum, Satta, Khakee and the recent Marathi film, Natarang.

Neha Dhupia

This former Miss India made her Hindi film debut in Qayamat - City Under Threat, but her popularity increased only after playing a lead heroine in Julie. But from then on, Neha again went on to do some films with single or multiple heroines like Garam Masala, Delhii Heights, Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local and so on. But she really began being appreciated for her acting after starring in good supporting roles in Chup Chup Ke, Singh is Kinng and De Dana Dan. The actress star's in Vipul Shah's next, Action Replay. She has also been playing the lead in small-budget but important films like Mithya, Dasvidaniya, and the like.

Kunal Kapoor

The hunk who made his solo debut in Meenaxi opposite Tabu, had to get noticed. Kunal became a pin-up boy after his role in Rang De Basanti. And after his new solo film Hattrick didn't work, Kunal stuck to supporting but effective roles – Aaja Nach Le, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Bachna Ae Haseeno and Welcome to Sajjanpur. This actor somehow appears more confident when working with an ensemble cast.

Tusshar Kapoor

Tusshy has done several two-hero films. But somehow it seems he works harder on the three-hero or supporting roles coming his way. Look at Golmaal and Golmaal Returns, Shootout at Lokhandwala and Khakee. Coming up, is Tusshar in Golmaal 3.

Mugdha Godse

Model Mugdha Godse chose to begin her acting career in a supporting role. After all, it was Madhur Bhandarkar's film, Fashion. Mugdha acted with Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut, and held her own as the supportive friend, going on to win best debut award at Apsara Awards 2009. Her next film was All the Best where the other heroine was Bipasha Basu. Mugdha played her first lead role in Bhandarkar's Jail.

Divya Dutta

Here is one actress who's known to always deliver. Divya Dutta has shone in supporting roles in countless films, and yet she brings freshness to every character she essays. Her character of an untouchable girl, Jalebi, in Delhi-6 was highly acclaimed. Her films include Welcome to Sajjanpur, Veer-Zaara (won Zee Cine Awards), Umrao Jaan, Jogger's Park, Baghban, Morning Walk and LOC to name a few. She has been acting since 1994 in Hindi and Punjabi films. Next, she will be seen in Mallika Sherawat's Hisss.

Chandan Roy Sanyal

The wacko buddy of Shahid Kapoor in Kaminey was noticed by all right from the time the promos of the song Dhan Te Nan started airing. And the actor proved his worth in the film with his crazy histrionics. Chandan belongs to theatre and had done a bit role in Rang De Basanti, which was chopped. He had also apparently been approached for Delhi-6 and Delhi Belly as well. The actor has a long way to go.

Deepak Dobriyal

Another gem of an actor from Vishal Bhardwaj is Deepak Dobriyal. He won the Filmfare Special Performance Award for his role of Rajju Tiwari in Omkara. The actor had also been seen in Bhardwaj's Maqbool and The Blue Umbrella. After Omkara, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi-6 and Anurag Kashyap's Gulaal was where he won more hearts. Deepak has also acted in Shaurya and 1971 among other films.

Tisca Chopra

Tisca as dyslexic child Ishaan Awasthi's (Darsheel Safary) hapless mother in Taare Zameen Par was perfect. The actress, who started with theatre and TV, was later seen in Nandita Das' Firaaq.
