TIRUNELVELI: “Only AIADMK could provide a fair and transparent governance,” said Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on her visit to Tirunelveli. Jayalalithaa, who reached Tirunelveli late on Thursday afternoon campaigned for the party’s Tirunelveli mayoral candidate Vijila Sathyananth and councillor candidates at Vagaiyadimunai in Tirunelveli Town.Thanking voters for helping her form the government, she listed out the election promises that she had fulfilled since she came to power and noted the resolution that had adopted seeking economic sanction against Sri Lanka. On special cells being formed to probe land-grabbing charges, Jayalalithaa said, “25 special courts have been formed, 17,430 complaints have been received, 718 cases registered, 755 arrests have been made and property worth `625 crore usurped during the previous regime has been resorted to the rightful owners”.Pointing out that in the last four months, the State has become a haven of peace, she said now the police were functioning as friends of the people and not as rowdies.Taking a dig at the opposition, Jayalalithaa said that when DMK was in power, the State faced acute power shortage. “After AIADMK has come to power, the power shortage has started decreasing,” she claimed, adding that she would change the state into one without power shortage by next year.Accusing DMK men of corruption, she pointed out that the DMK-governed Tirunelveli Corporation had not implemented basic facilities. “If AIADMK comes to power new drinking water scheme, underground drainage scheme and approach roads at traffic busy places would be implemented,” she promised. She also promised that the Manur drinking water scheme and a new art and science college would be started. “Like you gave us a historical victory in the Assembly elections, give us victory in the local bodies too,” she said.
