KOZHIKODE: A 38-year-old woman was killed and three others injured in a powerful blast that occured in a fire cracker unit at Kakkur near here on Friday.The other three female employees, who sustained serious burns, have been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital and the condition of one is serious, said officials.The deceased was identified as Sheena, wife of Kizhakkepulikkottuchalil Pramod hailing from P C Palam near Kakkur, said Kakkur police officials.The condition of Priya, 40, of Kizhakkepulikkottuchalil, who suffered severe burns, is serious. Rema, 40, and Shyja, 38, suffered minor injuries. All of them are employees of the fire cracker unit run by Kizhakkepulikkottuchalil Raghavan.According to Kakkur police, the incident took place around 12.45 pm at the shed of the fire cracker unit on Friday. An initial investigation found that the friction while handling explosive chemicals caused the explosion. “It is suspected that the blast took place when one of the workers fell down with the chemicals, and the friction that followed led to the blast,” said Kakkur SI K Vijayan Karippa. Though the unit has explosive licence, it is suspected that more chemicals had been brought to the cracker unit in view of the huge demand for firecrackers during the upcoming Vishu festival and other temple festivals.An investigation in this regard will be conducted, said officials. The shed, where the women were engaged in fire cracker making, was completely damaged in the explosion.Police have registered a case under IPC section 304 and 9 (b) and 1 (b) of Explosive Act. Kozhikode Rural SP T K Rajmohan, ADM K P Ramadevi, Thamarassery DySP Jaison K Abraham, Balussery CI K R Anilkumar, a team of bomb squad and scientific experts inspected the spot. Fire and Rescue Service unit from Narikkuni also reached the spot.
