VELLORE: As many as 3,207 road accidents took place in 2011 in Vellore district and one-third of it was on the national highway.Of the total, 708 accidents claimed 768 lives. Three hundred and sixty six persons received severe injuries and 3,414 escaped with minor wounds, 1,125 accidents, one-third of the total number of accidents, occurred on the national highway and claimed 231 lives. Vellore taluk, Bagayam and Sathuvachari have been identified as accident prone zones. While, Sathuvachari, Vallalar, Perumugai, Melmonavur, Abdullahpuram, Pallikonda, Ambur town and Vaniyambadi town were identified as sensitive areas on the National Highway.Officials attached to the Regional Transport Office said, steps have been taken to create awareness among the public to ensure that 2012 should be an accident-free year.Cash of `32,32,126 as tax and `29,92,100 as fine was received in 2011.Vehicle check was conducted on 4,369 vehicles, of which, 403 were seized, 84 were found operating without fitness certification (FC), 813 vehicles were operating without insurance certificates, 68 without permits. Cases were registered against 956 vehicles for drivers not having valid licences, 445 for loading over the permitted limit, 526 for carrying more persons than allowed, 996 for operating without smoke certificate, 585 for using high decibel horns, 461 for setting up high power headlight and 56 for rear overhang (ROH).
