PUDUCHERRY: Tense moments prevailed in Keezhputhupattu Lankan refugee camp near here on Friday after a youth allegedly attempted to molest a two-and-a-half-year-old child. Hamlet residents staged a demonstration near the East Coast Road demanding the immediate arrest of the offender, who was later arrested.Police said the toddler was playing in the refugee camp, while her mother Devadarshini was busy cooking in the kitchen on Thursday night when the incident occurred. Devadarshini had noticed a youth near her dwelling in the the refugee camp. After a while, the child went missing. Soon, the neighbours launched a search only to find the child on the beach along with the youth. On seeing people, the youth threw the toddler aside and ran away. But he was chased and caught by the people of the camp. However, some fishermen from Mudaliarkuppam intervened and managed to free the youth from their custody.The hamlet residents then lodged a complaint with the Kottakuppam Police, falling under the Tamil Nadu limits.However, they were not convinced with the assurance given by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sivanesan and Inspector Sekar that the offender would be caught soon. Soon, they staged a demonstration near the East Coast Road. Later, Tindivanam tahsildar Thalaimalai and Sivanesan held talks with the agitators and pacified them.Meanwhile, Sugumaran (21), son of Rajendran, was arrested from a house in Mudaliarkuppam and Tindivanam Sub-collector Shanmugham informed the agitators about the arrest. Subsequently, the agitation was withdrawn. The official also assured them of enhanced security for the camp and an all-night vigil.
