Buddha Purnima is a major Buddhist festival that commemorates the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who later became Gautam Buddha and founded Buddhism. In India, Buddha Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of Vaisakha month in the Hindu calendar. This year, Buddha Purnima falls on May 23, 2024. However, countries like China, Japan, Bhutan, and Thailand go by their own lunar-solar calendars, so their date of Buddha Purnima varies.
In India, Buddha Purnima is celebrated by making visits to Buddhist viharas and attending special prayers. Devotees also prepare kheer, to recall the lore of Sujata, a farmer’s wife who had fed Gautama Buddha a bowl of kheer and ended his six years of asceticism. Buddha Purnima is majorly celebrated in Maharashtra, Sikkim, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar’s Bodh Gaya, Lahaul and Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh, parts of North Bengal such as Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Kurseong.
