As India celebrates National Tourism Day on the 25th of January, recognizing the invaluable impact of travel, exploration, and cultural exchange between people, it is often local hosts who play a pivotal role in fostering tourism at the grassroots level – creating an atmosphere of warmth and cultural exchange as they open up their homes to travellers.
Tucked away in a serene village near Manali, Pehlingpa Home on Airbnb is one such home that is nestled amidst the tranquility of apple orchards. Accessible only by ascending 100 stairs, the journey to this homestay is a prelude to the peaceful escape that awaits visitors. The homestay’s charm lies in its seclusion, the property is a peaceful heaven where you can truly disconnect from the noise of everyday life yet remain only a stone’s throw away from the market or highway.
Seema’s journey as a host began at the age of 40, and it wasn’t easy at the start. Not wanting to move out of her beautiful village, she searched long and hard before finding a piece of land. With a vision of building a place that was off beat yet equipped with all modern amenities, Seema realized it by creating the Pehlingpa Home.
An avid promotor of tourism, Seema says that she always tells her guests about local tourist attractions they can visit while staying at her property. If her guests ever need a cab, her first choice is to hire local drivers from the village or a nearby place. Having an organic farm at her property itself, Seema also gives her guests a farming experience, contributing to the local tourism ecosystem. Designed to offer guests a comprehensive and interactive experience, visitors can participate in hands-on activities such as planting crops and learning about sustainable farming practices. Making it a point to encourage travellers to buy local, Seema makes it point to offer locally made jams, pickles, woollen socks, shawls and caps to all her guests.
The rooms of the Pehlingpa Home provide breathtaking views of the river and the mountains, allowing guests to wake up to the soothing sounds of flowing water and the chirping of birds. In the evening, the homestay comes alive with the mesmerizing play of colours as the sun sets behind the mountain. The entire cottage is predominantly crafted from wood and stones. Every weathered plank, aged door, and worn window holds memories of bygone days, giving Pehlingpa Home a sense of deep heritage and significance.
