Amitabh Bachchan opened up about his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s first wife. Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a renowned poet, was first married to Shyama Bachchan. However, it is reported that she died a few years into the marriage. Although much is not known about her, Amitabh recently revealed that his father was depressed after her death. Speaking with Aamir Khan in the recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh revealed the aftermath of his father’s first wife and how Harivansh met Teji, Amitabh’s mother.
“My father’s first wife passed away. Uske baad wo gambhir sitti mein chale gaye, bahut depressed state mein the aur jitni bhi kavita unhone likhi, uss zamaane mein, bahut dark thi. Bahut dukh ke saath bhari hui thi. Kuch varsho ke baad, wo kavi samelan karte the thaaki kuch paise mil jaate the (He slipped into a depressive state of mind. He wrote many poems that were sad and dark in nature. After a few years, he began participating in poetry gatherings),” Amitabh said on KBC.
“He had a friend in Bareilly and got an invite to meet him. My father went to meet him. During the dinner, he was requested to narrate a poem. But before my father could begin, his friend asked his wife to call in Teji. That’s where he met her,” Big B added.
Amitabh said that his father described Teji as a beautiful woman. He also remembered the clothes that she was wearing the day they met. Amitabh said that his mother came and sat quietly to listen to his father’s poem. His father read out a poem, Kya Karu Samvedna Lekar Tumhari. After the narration, Teji was in tears. Even Amitabh’s father was in tears. His friend left the couple alone. A while later, his friend came out with a garland and asked Harivansh Rai Bachchan to place it on her. “That was the day he decided she was his life partner,” he said.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan got married in 1941 and welcomed Amitabh on October 11, 1942. Amitabh turned 82 last Friday.
