Bharat Ratna was instituted in the year 1954 and is awarded to people for their exceptional public service and performance of the highest order in any field like literature, science and art.

On February 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on X (formerly Twitter) that former Prime Ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, as well as agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan, would be awarded the Bharat Ratna. The big announcement came shortly after the government honoured veteran BJP leader LK Advani and former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur. This is the highest number of Bharat Ratna announced in a year, with five, one more than the four announced in 1999. After the announcement, several Bollywood actors like Anil Kapoor, Randeep Hooda and Anupam Kher have hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for conferring Bharat Ratna to these three towering personalities.

Anil Kapoor took to his X(formerly Twitter) handle and wrote, “The government & Hon PM Shri @narendramodi ji, pays a fitting tribute to the unmatched leadership of Chaudhary Charan Singh through the Bharat Ratna recognition. His timeless legacy as a champion of peasants remains integral to shaping our nation’s agricultural policies and social ethos.”

Randeep Hooda shared, “#PVNarasimhaRao , #ChaudharyCharanSingh and #MSSwaminathan, all of them were architects of modern India in their own way. It’s great to see @PMOIndia bestowing them with the most prestigious #BharatRatna to acknowledge their contributions and keeping them alive in the minds of the young generation. #BharatRatnaAward.”

Anupam Kher expressed, “A great decision by the government under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji to honour #BharatRatna to the two former Prime Ministers! Two towering personalities from our public life, #ChoudharyCharanSingh ji and #PVNarasimhaRao Ji. We’ll forever remain indebted to them for their enormous contribution to the country. Jai Hind! .”

Last week, BJP veteran and former deputy prime minister Lal Krishna Advani accepted the honour of Bharat Ratna with “humility and gratitude” and said that the motto — “This life is not mine. My life is for my Nation” — is what inspired his life.

He extended his gratitude towards the two persons, with whom he had the “honour of working closely” — Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Earlier in January, President Droupadi Murmu announced that former Bihar chief minister Karpoori will be conferred with Bharat Ratna posthumously.
