Renowned director S Shankar is celebrated for his blockbuster collaborations with South superstar Rajinikanth in films like Robot, Shivaji and 2.0. But did you know the iconic role of Chitti in Robot played by Rajinikanth was initially offered to Shah Rukh Khan? However, due to creative issues, the project was dropped. Following the success of Shivaji, Shankar revisited the project and approached Rajinikanth, ultimately casting him in the lead role. The film turned out to be the highest grossing Tamil film of that time. The sequel of the movie, 2.0, also turned out to be a huge success at box office.
In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, director Shankar hinted at the possibility of future collaborations with Shah Rukh. Reflecting on the past interactions, he revealed that they had met several times for a film but for various reasons, things didn’t align.
“After the release of Robot, I met Shah Rukh Khan a couple of times for a film, but things didn’t fall in place. Now, if a script comes to my mind, which is suitable for SRK sir, I will definitely do that,” he told the portal.
During the interview, Shankar also discussed his upcoming projects and his vision for the future of Indian cinema. He revealed his several ideas including a historical film, a project inspired by the popular James Bond movie and a science fiction concept which can be similar to the Hollywood film 2012.
“There are a lot of ideas. I have 2-3 ideas: one is a historical film, and the other is like a James Bond film—not exactly James Bond, but I’m using the term for categorisation. Also, there’s a science fiction idea, similar to 2012,” he said.
Shankar is currently focused on the upcoming release of Indian 2 starring Kamal Haasan who is reprising the role of Senapathy from the 1996 cult film, Indian. This sequel marks the return of Senapathy who is an aging freedom fighter turned vigilante combating corruption. Apart from Kamal Haasan, the ensemble cast includes Siddharth, SJ Suryah, Rakul Preet Singh, Bobby Simha and several others.
Indian 2 is scheduled to release worldwide on July 12. Due to its extensive length, the film has been divided into two parts with the second installment slated for a release in 2025.
On the other hand, Shah Rukh Khan is gearing up for a collaboration with his daughter Suhana Khan for the first time in an action-packed film titled The King. The film will be released in 2025.
